The short answer
Pit Boss makes wood pellet grills. Its Onyx Edition page lists "5-degree increment settings" for temperatures "ranging from 180º to 500ºF." Among the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth models that showed a price, the US store listed $649.99 to $1,199.99 on 3 November 2026. 2 3
How a pellet grill works
A pellet grill is an outdoor cooker, and Pit Boss sells several series of them. Wikipedia describes them as outdoor cookers "that combine elements of charcoal smokers, gas grills, and kitchen ovens." 5
The fuel is wood pellets. A motor-driven auger moves them. In Wikipedia's words: "A motor-driven auger then feeds a small amount of pellets from the hopper to the fire pot." 5
You set a temperature on the control panel. The panel's digital controller "initiates or halts the auger when the grill exceeds or falls below a specified threshold." 5
Pit Boss sells grills of this kind. For its Onyx Edition, Pit Boss says it has "5-degree increment settings to target indirect cooking temperatures ranging from 180º to 500ºF." 2

How to start a Pit Boss pellet grill
Pit Boss's FAQ gives one starting step: "Start the grill with the lid open on the smoke setting for 10 minutes." 1
The FAQ says: "Many of our Pit Boss grills have a Prime Button." It says a grill that "has never been used or has run completely out of pellets" needs priming. Holding the button helps, because "Holding the Prime button prevents the auger from pausing, so the pellets arrive more quickly." 1
Steps differ between models. Follow the manual for yours. We haven't used these grills, so we don't give a full lighting routine here.
Where to put it and what about rain
Keep it outside. In its answer about connecting the Pit Boss app, the FAQ says: "Please keep the grill outside and at least 36 inches from combustible constructions." 1
On rain, the FAQ says: "Your grill can be used in a light rain, but since it is an electronic appliance, care must be taken to prevent any connections from being exposed to rain." It says the hopper lid "will protect them from a light rain, but not necessarily from heavy rain." Water in the pellets is a risk too: "Water getting into the pellets will cause them to swell, disintegrate, and later harden, causing an auger jam". Read the manual for your model. 1
Pellets and cleaning
On pellets, Pit Boss says: "To ensure proper performance, we always recommend using Pit Boss or Louisiana Grills brand pellets in your grill." That's a recommendation. The FAQ says you can use other brands "if they are hardwood pellets, designed to be used in a wood pellet grill." 1
It also says: "Always store pellets in an airtight container when they are not in the smoker." 1
For cleaning, Pit Boss says: "We recommend cleaning your grill after running 40-60 lbs. of pellets through it." 1
Grills with a flame broiler get one more warning: "You should not use water to clean the flame broiler because it accelerates rusting." 1
Pizza ovens are a different cooker
Pellet grills aren't the only way to cook outside. Some people want a pizza oven as well. Our page on Ooni pizza ovens covers one maker whose ovens burn wood, burn gas or run on electricity. Ooni's prices there are dated like these. Click here to read about the Ooni range.
